Example text

As readers think more about this, it may be instructive to compare this book – whose contributors are mostly based in British universities – with three other introductory human geography texts (Le Heron et al. 1999; Wait et al. 2000; Knox and Marston 2001) written (and, like An Introduction to Human Geography, published by multinational information, media and publishing companies) from Australia, New Zealand and the United States respectively. Consider how the contents and style of this text, like those others, is marked by where it was written.

For the most part, the evolution of human geography has been driven by the adoption of ideas, concepts and theories from other disciplines. The challenge for human geographers has been to apply these to a geographical context. Economic geography, for example, initially took ideas from economics and business studies and applied them to help explain how economic activity is distributed across space. The geography of economic activities was seen as the outcome of this process with the job of the geographer being to map and describe that pattern of economic activity.

The second edition of an innovative text: forty-three inviting short chapters that reflect the diversity of approaches in contemporary human geography. Designed more for the UK market, but well worth delving into wherever you may be. Knox, P. A. (2006) Human Geography: Places and Regions in Global Context, 4th edition, Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ. A comprehensive text written principally for the US market with lots of colour pictures and diagrams. Probably the best US textbook. Supported by a website, which is worth using, even if you do not have the book.
