As noted, they are, first, time-dependent and not energy-dependent [6–8]. That is, the physical unfolding of the process depends on the time that has elapsed and on the time required for each step, rather than on the relative energies of the steps. By contrast, the course of an energy-dependent process is determined by the energy gradient that exists [1–3]. Second, each action in a mechanical process comes about because of the specific circumstances that exist at that place and at that point in time; it is not energetically favored per se [6–8].

Thus, the path of a billiard ball on a table will be affected by both its mechanical impulses and the landscape of the table. However, one of these will usually dominate the other. The more it dominates, the more the system will take on its characteristics overall. Thus, the relationship between thermodynamics and mechanics is always relative. In other words, the steepness of the energy landscape of a system can only ever be evaluated relative to the influence of the mechanical processes that occur within it.

Thus, if the table was not flat, but instead steeply contoured, then the arrangement of the balls would depend mostly on the landscape of the table. Each ball would ultimately end up rolling into and staying in the deepest well that was accessible to it. In other words, the arrangement of the table immediately after the balls have been placed on it, would not unfold according to their momenta and interactions over time per se. Rather, it would be controlled by the landscape that exists and the initial positions of the balls on it.
