In 1898 the trades council and the ILP were successful in getting six candidates elected to the city council, and they formed the first 'Labour Group' on any local authority in Ireland. However, Belfast politics were dominated by Unionists and Labour was unable to win a parliamentary seat in the 'working class' city of Belfast.
